Kater Karma is not an unknown name in the Suriname music scene. With creative and cultural twists to the status quo of popular music genres in Suriname, he's always ahead of the pack. Many up and coming young artists trying to emulate his style. I've been enjoying his recent single "Kiyoo" on the radio for a while now.
He was an up and coming artist himself not so long ago, and you could argue that he is still making his way to the top internationally. Born Regilio Pinas in 1988, he quickly got into music and soccer at an early age. Before he pursued the path of an artist he was first a mid-fielder in the national soccer team of Suriname. A man of many talents indeed. Somewhere around 2010 at the age of 22 he decided to go into music fulltime mainly focusing on reggae and dancehall.
It took a while to reach the popularity he enjoys now, but he was determined and around 2017 he was a household name. He was even on one of the lists in the last election of 2020, but I won't get into that.
Now back to the song Kiyoo. Many others in this genre in Suriname resort to a standard style and setup, but not Kater Karma, as he has his own unique style of adding something extra to the mix, drawing attention to his creations. The language in which he sings is Aucaans, a language belonging to one of the tribes that resulted from escaped slaves or maroons. I like the traditional scenery in the clips, but he could've done without the "kanye and kim motorcycle" bit in the middle in my opinion.
Loosely translated to English the word 'Kiyoo' stands for 'manperson' or 'manspersoon' in dutch. Something like 'manly man' I guess. He sings about the responsibilities of a man, and how his partner would not have to worry about a thing, as he would care for her.
