Many people love the country they grew up in. Whether it be an emotional attachment, memories you have or just because all your family is there, we've all had that slight feeling of patriotism. All of this because some early explorers decided to draw imaginary lines on a map, separating ownership of land per entity. There are probably also quite a few people that feel nothing but despair for their birth country. Maybe someone in a country with heavy inflation and really bad quality of life. Or people living under crude dictatorship.
Those people would obviously rather be in another country, for a better life. And then there's the in-betweeners. The people who are always close to or on the fence of whether they like their country or not. It's usually this group that decides to migrate somewhere else, especially if they have some kind of skill that they can leverage.
This is where the brain drain begins, the best hope of a country to turn itself around fleeing to bigger better things. And who can blame them. It's usually developing countries that experience this a lot. And the brain drain comes usually when politics are messing with the dynamic and therefore the hope of the residents.
I recently had different discussions with different people. Not that I was looking for the conversations, it was just coincidence that the topic came up in certain situations. And within these conversations it's always interesting to hear the varying viewpoints.
It also dawned on me that from my frequent group of friends, at least half is living somewhere outside of the country by now. All of them highly skilled people who wanted something better than corruption and massive inflation, and a periodic repeat of it. Some of them even have their homes here, rented out or few cases empty, waiting for the owner to return.
People migrating to where they think the grass is greener happens all over the world. It's a win win situation for the individuals, but a serious hit for the countries affected by the disappearance of knowledge. Crypto might change this with equal opportunities for most, but for now the brain drain continues, as the world evolves into it's final decentralized form.
