Hi hivers and ReggaeJahmmers.
For this week’s dashout , I have a small bento my huzzy took home. He had a busy time at work and he and his co-workers were provided with lunch, dinner and a little extra. He carried home the extra for me. Haha.
I really appreciated it but by the time he got home, the kids and I had already eaten and were full. We had to eat it the following day. I’ll call it my weekend special.
One thing I really like about Japanese food is, it’s always well presented and comes with a variety of items and in a variety of colors. It has even impacted how I prepare meals at home. I try to make them presentable but not to bento standards. Lol!
To be honest, often times when eating a bento (lunch box), there are usually at least two items that I don’t know the names of. With such variety, there are times I know I’m eating some kind of tofu but may not know the name, some kind of pickle but not exactly sure of the kind and and so on.
So, what was in the bento?
I’ll say and describe what I can. I shared the bento with the family.
There was rice, topped with pickled plum (umeboshi) and sprinkled with black sesame seeds. This is quite common though there are many different kinds of pickled plums. This particular one is a bit crisp to the bite. I love it but my favorite is honey-pickled plums. I like a mixed taste of sweet, sour and salty.
The next section of the bento had mini-meat balls, lotus root, rolled egg (tamagoyaki), some vegetables, fish paste(Kamaboko, the pink flower) and konjac. Now, I had to highlight konjac because I just realized I was spelling and pronouncing it incorrectly for quite a long time. I thought it was cognac. 😆😆That’s actually liquor. I’m no liquor head but that’s what I’ve been calling it. Someone must have heard. Luckily I decided to check the spelling.
This section had a tofu steak, fried fish and some meat. Sorry, that yellow and white thing you’re looking at, I’m not sure what it is and can’t remember which family member had it. I assume it was good because it went missing.
The final little section had pink pickles. I think they’re made from radish. They’re quite common. It also had a sweet dumpling with sesame seeds (goma dango). I really believe that fitting such a variety in one box is in itself a work of art. It’s not bulky, it’s attractive and has a great mix of tastes and flavors.
Not to be forgotten , are the chopsticks(ohashi) and wet napkin (oshibori) that were attached inside on the cover of the box. All were neatly packed for a complete meal.
We all loved and enjoyed it.
@bearmol, arigatou (thank you). Thanks 😍
