TTT - Glen Cambell - Ghost on the Canvas Sessions:Duets

in Music3 months ago

I havent made a Three Tune Tuesday Post (TTT - a great weekly initiative from @ablaze) for quite a while, but I stumbled across a fantastic album that I had never heard of before quite by chance at the weekend.

I'm lately become more of a fan of some of Glen Campbell's work (although he is not someone I would have traditionally listened too). He is considered a country star (not my fav genre) and had his main hits in the 60s and 70s. Sadly he developed Alzheimer's and died in 2017. He recorded a farewell album in 2010 called Ghosts on the Canvas, although it turned out to be his second last album (Adios was actually his last album).

I hadnt heard of ghost on the Canvas until this weekend, when one of the songs from it auto-played while I was listening to spotify. But it turns out that another version of the album was released this year, which had additional music added to the existing tracks posthumously by a number of famous artists, basically making an album of beyond the grave duets ! When I listened to the full album I was quite astounded as to how good it is.

The first tune is duet with Carole King (who I love) on the second song on the album called 'There's no me without you'. Its my fav song from the album. When listening to the album and the lyrics, you can tell that the writer was facing moratality and end of life at the time - and that comes out in the quality of the work. It feels very personal and like its a work of love.

The next tune is the third song on the album, also called Ghost on the Canvas, and this time features Sting. I'm quite a big Police fan and hence like Sting's abilities (even if I think he comes across as a tad arrogant and self righteous).

The third song is the last song on the album called 'I'm not Gonna Miss You' , which features Elton John, and wraps the album up quite nicely.

I have to say I'm really enjoying listening to this album. Its well recorded and the music quality is top notch. The various collaborations bring quite a different angle to the songs. The full track list with the collabs can be seen below:

I was also quite surprised to see the collab with Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys on there. Its quite cool as it has a number of the trade-mark beach boy harmonies going on. The song with Dolly Parton is also quite cool. When I heard it at first via auto-play on spotify, it was the first track called 'intro' which caught my attention, and that is just all Glen Campbell doing some acapella oohs (no lyrics). Pretty cool though.

Well, I love it when you find a gem of an album totally by chance, especially if its not an artist/genre which you'd normally listen to - and I thought it was worth sharing. So that wraps up my TTT post for this week - I hope you enjoy the tunes from a great artist - what a lovely album to leave behind.

I am a fan of Glen's classics from the decades you mention above, which like you is a strange as I am no country fan (don't you have to be American for that?).

These I have never heard before.

Good choices dear friend, finding new music unexpectedly is always such a treat, especially when it’s from an artist you wouldn't normally listen to. Glen Campbell’s collaborations sound epic man. I’ll definitely give this album a listen 😍😍😍😍😍😍

I'm going to have to check out this album. My mom used to have his autograph a long time ago, but I think she eventually threw it away.

That must be a helluva album, judging from just the duets shared. This entire album is definitely worth a listen to!
