I’ve never been patriotic AT ALL but I also come from a country that is considered the most powerful in the world.
If you're from the USA you're one of the few who thinks like that. Of course, my notion of US-citizens being (overly) patriotic comes from large corporate media and I know better than to generalize a whole population 😅.
I imagine if that were not the case I’d feel excited about someone from my country becoming world famous, especially a country like Suriname which our dumb education systems teach us NOTHING about.
Hahaha, I can't speak for all of my countrymen, but for me it's important to highlight the people with a Surinamese background being successful, because growing up we (I) didn't have a lot of those. There's also a common saying that people who've made it internationally aren't being honored or respected by the country they come from. Some who've made a name for themselves have tried to do their part and give back, but get opposed because of (hidden) agendas. Everywhere politics plays a role and people often think "what's in it for me?"
Oh, and did you know that Suriname was exchanged for New York (City I think) after the Dutch-Anglo wars?
