Howdy! Been a minute. About time I get back into my Jamaica blog series. The trip was last summer and when I came back I had time to create a few posts. But then I got busy again. The life of a teacher. But reminiscing about the trip now, it all seems like a dream. Onwards.
If there’s one place in Jamaica that never gets old, it’s Dunn’s River Falls. No matter how many times I visit, the experience is just as breathtaking as the first time. There’s something magical about climbing a waterfall, feeling the rush of cool, freshwater against your skin, and taking in the lush tropical beauty around you.
And it is even better when you get to climb the falls with your twin sons. The last time we were here they were not big enough to climb the falls and only played around in river pools and on the beach.
My youngest, this guy write here, he couldn't manage the falls, I tried carrying him but the entire ordeal was scary for him. He literally cried for his Mama.
And here I am trying to bring him up the falls. It's all good until the water starts rushing at yah fast like a bullet train in Tokyo.
The moment you step into Dunn’s River Falls Park in Ocho Rios, you can already hear the sound of the water crashing down the rocks. It’s one of those places that makes you stop and go, Wow, this is nature at its finest. The falls are about 600 feet long, but the way they flow down in little terraces makes them look like a giant natural staircase, a very slippery one. Another thing that caught my nature eye was the amount of vultures soaring above the falls and resting in the mountain like trees. Well the vultures chose a good chill spot.
🧗🏽♂️The Climb
Now, I’ll be honest—the first time I climbed the falls, I was a little nervous.( That was years ago). The rocks are smooth but can be slippery and at some points the water comes down hard. So wearing water shoes is a must. (Trust me, I learned the hard way on prior trips.) But once you get started, the climb is pure fun. You hold hands with your group ( if they are willing ), stepping carefully from rock to rock as the cool water rushes around your feet. It’s like nature’s version of a water park! My boys went ahead of me and the youngest Aijah. They couldn't wait. But once Aijah went crying to mom, I quickly caught up with them and gave a helping hand when the path got a bit tricky. I guess there is a life lessons there.
Every few steps, there are natural pools where you can stop, take a break, and soak in the refreshing water. ( My boys were more focused on completing the falls). It’s the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. And if you don’t feel like climbing, you can always hang out at the bottom, splash around, and just take in the view. Oh, did I mention that Dunn's river flows right into the sea? So you don't even have to climb the falls, you can chill at the beach, enjoy water sports or just stroll around the premises.
The only thing I can complain about on this visit to Dunn's River was that it felt rushed. I was travelling with a party of 7 and we didn't have much time in Jamaica. So we had to get a lot in. We literally were in and out of the adventure in less than two hours. Dunn's River is a place you could spend the entire day and not get bored. But I am happy my twins climbed the falls and really enjoyed it. I could have done well doing some meditation under one of the many mini falls. But hey, that's just the way it is.
🏖️ Tips for the Best Experience
✅ Go early! The place gets crowded, especially when cruise ships are in town.
✅ Bring water shoes – the rocks can be slippery, and you don’t want to be that person struggling barefoot.
✅ Wear a swimsuit – you will get wet.
✅ Bring a waterproof phone case or let the on-site photographers snap some shots for you.
✅ Take your time – enjoy the climb, splash in the pools, and soak up the experience.
✅ This one isn't necessary but if you are a content creator, BRING A GoPro, one with a floating handle.
💙 Why I Keep Going Back
Dunn’s River Falls is one of those places that truly captures the spirit of Yard—fun, adventurous, and natural beauty. Every time I visit, I meet new people, make new memories, and fall in love with the country of my birth all over again. ( Not that I ever fell outta love). Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just looking for a chill day in paradise, this place is a must-visit. It's fun adventure for any kind of group.
So, if you ever find yourself in Jamaica, do yourself a favor and climb Dunn’s River Falls. It’s an experience you won’t forget! 🌊✨ but be careful as you might break your ass slipping on a rock.😆
